A little background on me first. I always wanted a motorcycle but my mom was/is extremely anti-motorcycle so I never got one while at home. Finally about 2 years ago I bought myself a ZRX1100 crotch rocket and learned how to ride it. (up to that point I had never even sat on a motorcycle). Had a few close calls and scared myself so I parked it in the garage for 2 months and was scared to ride it. Finally had a friend come over and teach me the safe and proper way to work the clutch and throttle. Also took the state safety class (best $150 I ever spent). Rode the crotch rocket for about a year and then traded it in for my current Vulcan 1600 which I love.
Now to the advise part. My wife has no interest in riding. I want her to come ride with me and the guys and eventually I want to get her a small bike and ride together. How do I go about getting her past the "motorcycles will kill you" phase and come along for a ride? How did you guys get your wives involved in riding? Or is it just something that they either have or dont?
geno48, 7 months ago | FlagI had one like that......
bought her a bike and all the goodies. Wasted my time with all that...she wouldn't ride..LOL Finally divorced her and got a hot chick that loves to ride.....I really don't recommend it (divorce). .....just get a hot chick to ride with you under the pretense that she's just a friend that loves to ride!!! If that doesn't work...jus t put a solo seat on the scoot and ride alone! LOL.....Ju st kidding... .keep praying that she will ride....an d I hope she does...she will probably learn to love it!
sspivey, 9 months ago | FlagOh yeah I forgot that I got us the Chatterbox
tandem pro set so we could talk to each other as we rode and that was very helpful because i told her ahead of time what we were going to do with the bike so she wouldn't be surprised and she loved this cause she didn't feel isolated on the back of the bike. Stephen
sspivey, 9 months ago | FlagI went through the same thing. I have been married to my wife for 8 years now and i have always wanted a bike but she was agaist it because of a past friend of hers who got killed riding.
First I am a Christian and I believe that the day of your birth and the day of your death is already recorded in the book of life of the Lord so basically you can be on combat patrol in IRAQ for 15 months and come home without a scratch like I did because it wasn't my time or you can have a nice safe office job in the World Trade Center and die unexpextantly. So your profession or your past times don't change your day as far as I'm concerned. That being said you should still be careful and not play in traffic as you don't want to look stupid if it is your day to go.
Therefore riding a Motorcycle is not going to end your life any sooner than what's scheduled(known to only God). I bought my first Bike(Honda Shadow Areo 750VT) last year due to a transfer and having to commute 61 miles a day. I was timid at first even though I was 41 years old and an Infantry soldier in the ARMY for the past 18 years. I attended the Motorcycle Safety Course which was extremely helpful. I also purchased the highest level safety gear from head to toe(yes this was expensive but my health is worth it). I also purchased her a set too! even though she swore to never ride with me! Her favorite color is purple so I got those colors for her to entice her interest. I did not force the issue however.
I talked about my rides to work on the busy highway and the precautions that I took to be safe, then after I had ridin down some of the country roads at a slow pace and experienced that freedom that all of us know now I told her how much I was enjoying the exhiliration and getting to see all the farms and houses along the way. Now one thing that helped was the fact that we also ride a bicycle for 2 since she has a restrictive lung disease and cannot keep up with me on seperate bicyles so she knows how careful and observant I am as we have to ride on the side of some busy streets in traffic to get to the bicycle paths in our city.
Our very good friends purchased a HD 883 at the same time and my buddy's wife finally convinced her start riding with me, slow in the nieghborhood at first as I also needed to practice how to handle the bike with a passenger on board too. Next I got her the "buttybuddy" which is seat designed especially for a womens butt and is well worth $99 bucks I paid!! buttybuddy.com Now she loves to ride but she has no desire to drive one herself and remember if you ride a 1600 she will not be able to keep up with a smaller one to ride with you. Good luck!! Stephen
als1953, 10 months ago | FlagAgree with you all. Don't push. Why not take her along to some social events that have ladies who ride/pilli
on present (Go in the car, walk whatever) By having your wife talk to other participat ing ladies, she may see what there is to enjoy about the experience . My ex wife wasn't keen. Mostly didn't like helmet hair. Coz is much more down to earth. Trouble is it's hard to get a solo ride in sometimes. lol
PhilCole, 10 months ago | FlagTracy(PG) I have just come home froma 150km Sunday ride. Want to come around and wash my bike?? Please. Please. Please.
I agree about the back rest comments too. When my son started to ride with me I didnt have one at all. When I fitted the gear sack rack it acted like a back rest. I found having that did more for my head than anything. I was carrying the most precious cargo I was ever going to carry. I felt comfortabl
e that he wasn't going to slide off the back!!! He was comfortabl e to lean on it and at one time fell asleep. Luckily I felt him relax and was able to reach behind and touch his leg. We too had an intercom system and as PG said it is helpful when something is comming up.
