Good timing on extended warranty

Last year Kyle changed the tires on my Goldwing for me - after we made sure the rear was properly worn down:

at about the same time I started to get a noise from the transmission at idle. I thought we burned the clutch but since the bike was still running fine I didn't do anything about it.

I finally dropped the Wing off for service a few weeks ago. Turns out that the alternator is fried, it only puts out 8V.

Here is the kicker: I bought the bike in 2002 with a 3 year factory warranty, bought a 4 year extended warranty on top of that. That one expired 6/9/09, not even a week after I dropped it off for service. The repair is now covered Laughing

I don't buy extended warranties for my other bikes anymore. Bikes are so reliable these days that it's not a good investment in my opinion.

  • Hi Phil,

I think there is gasoline in the water here in California - high octane!

  • I like my warranty, with all the stuff they put into bike now you almost need a PHD to change spark plugs and oil. My heated grips and seat stop working last winter, they had my bike for almost a week triing to find the problem, without the warranty the labor alone was $700, plus the parts. With the warranty $0.00...

I will be getting the extended this year when mine runs out.

  • Oh... that being said... I just bought the 4 year extended warranty for my 2006 Goldwing with 98K miles on it!  I am now covered until 2013 and unllimited miles! (maybe soon I'll get that 2nd gear looked at!)

  • Heck... I wouldn't buy a used bike from myself either as I know I would run it to the bone myself and I would need as "fresh of a bike" as possible!

I would however LOVE to BE one of my bikes!

    Why?

I would Always be on the move... would never be stuck in some dark lonley garage... would be treated better than any 4 wheeled vehicle... would ALWAYS have many garage friends... would get Oil every 3-4k miles along with a complete inspection!

My bikes do LOVE to be ridden and ridden hard!

  • Fruit loops......? Saw  a guy in a burn out comp once. The prize was $100. He burnt the clutch out and had to have his bike towed home.
