Installing risers

The Barons risers that I ordered a couple of months ago have arrived at my place and here I am at work unable to play with them.

I'm going to have a look at them when I get home tonight and might even have a go at putting them on if I'm feeling brave. I'm very cautious about making mods to my baby and usually pay my mechanic to do it, but in this case the existing cables should be ok and I feel pretty good about it all. All I will need to pick up is some red loctite.

Worst case, I might leave it for Friday when I have the whole day off.

My bike is a Yamaha XVS1100 Custom - I reckon they'll look great on and stop me hunching over so much.

Does anyone have any tips for new players as far as installing risers?

EDIT: The risers do not fit without getting custom cables made.

  • I had the same problem with the brake line. Too short. What worked for me was just re-route the line behind the tripple tree. I actually had to do this with both throttle cables and the clutch cable as well. I added a 4-1/2" riser to my V-Star and that was the only issue I ran into. I also used NO lock-tite and have had no problems. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the advice guys - I went out and laid the towels/blankets down to protect everything, undid the handlebars from the risers, laid them down on the tank, figured I'd have to undo the headlight to get into the triple tree to undo the bolts and was all ready to proceed when I thought I'd better just double check that the cables and such were gonna reach. Lucky I did because I discovered that the brake line isn't going to have a hope of stretching the distance Frown


    Looks like another job for the shop - dammit!

  • I agree with what they said.


    An extra pair of hands is always helpful! But I didn't have.


    I layed towels over my headlight, light bar and gas tank. Removed my mirrors. Removed my bars from the stock risers. Flipped the bars to the front and rested them on the towel covered lights. Removed the stock risers. Attached the new risers "loosely for adjustment". Attached the handlebars to the new risers, while sitting on the seat "again loosely". Decided how I wanted the bars to sit for comfort. Adjusted the bars until they were right. Tightened everything without incident. Didn't use locktite, because I rarely ever do. One year later and no problems.
