Me and my daughter

Lou from St.George Utah

I actually only been riding since last year. I can thank my brother and his buddies for cruising to Utah to say hello, since they came out I told them I would get a bike and start riding. I've always wanted to ride but my wife had a problem with it. I decided to get one anyway, she was upset at first, but she is ok with it now. However she said she would never get on with me. I've asked her several times to go on a ride with me, but she says no. I finally asked her what the problem was, she said she was afraid to get hit. Anyway I love to ride regardless. It would be nice to have my wife go with but unfortuanetely it's not happening for now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, ride safe and enjoy

Thanks for responding to my message. Since i got my bike I've taken trips to california for the love ride they had in october of 2008. I've gone to Las vegas bike week as well, I've put 8,000 thousand miles on already. I ride every day. One other thing I forgot to mention is that my 9 year old daughter loves to ride. I think my wife is just stubborn, I believe i've shown her that I drive cautious however i know you have to ride on the defense at all times. I respect the machine and have dodge cars on several occasions because of bad drivers not because they didnt see me or heard me. I do this in a car as well. I think my wife just needs time. I know I will get sharper with time as well.

  • Don't push her it took my wife about a year before she wanted to ride . That was last Sunday and she enjoyed it and wants to go for a ride every week. Just let it happen.

  • Copied annd pasted from my "my bike" page, be careful, It'll cost ya when she changes her mind. In May 07 I decided to get a 250 Yamaha Virago to ride around town and figured I be able to talk wifey into going for a ride someday. After a week or so she gave in and we went for a 3 mile ride. When we pulled back into the garage we got off the 250 and she looked at the bike, looked at me and looked back at the bike and to my utter amazment said "You're gonna have to get a different bike cause I'm riding this one". I never in my widest dreams pictured my wife riding any kind of bike ever. So I went and bought the 650 Vstar and we rode the whole summer away. Over that 1st winter I kept catching her out in the garage sitting on the 650 and you guessed it she finally says "you're gonna have to get a different bike, cause I'm gonna start riding this one". I traded the 250 in on the 1300 and there you go. 3 new bikes in less than 1 year. ( and $3000.00 in add ons)She's ready to move up, but, maybe next summer.

  • I echo all prior comments! In addition the following has worked well for me... Never ever push her! Always come home with a smile. Explain how good it makes you feel. Eventually she will be curious an will ask for the ride. That day is a glorious day!

  • Give her time, she'll come around. It sounds like her fear is the "Other Guy", which you cannot do much about other than be sharp and on your toes.

    Good luck and keep riding!

  • Glad you got the bike anyway, that's a good start ;-)

Tra was very nervous on the motorcycle when we first rode over 3 years ago. She was terrified riding on the freeway. I'll have her tell the story on how she overcame that. I wouldn't recommend the "brute force" approach to everybody ;-)

I agree that the sissybar and floorboards are a great start because most passengers are afraid falling off the bike. Protective riding gear is very important as well.

If you are new rider you might want to ride the first 2000-5000 miles by yourself to get more experience to be able to handle all the tough situations you could encounter on the road.
