Rear Lighting Tail Section Opions

Kyle Bradshaw (manybikes) of Cruiser Customizing discusses motorcycle tail section or rear fender lighting in his video Cruiser Customizing Tip of the Week Motorcycle Rear Lighting

This is the text version of the video where I explore some of the options available for changing or replacing the lights that come on a stock motorcycle.

There are three basic types of lights currently used on modern motorcycles.

  • Incandescent - found on most stock bikes in the form of 1156 and 1157. Very few aftermarket parts use incandescent lighting.
  • Halogen - Halogen lights are most popular for headlights, and have recently (last 7 years) have become popular options for driving lights as well as run, turn, brake lights.
  • LED - These are the newest to be used in the motorcycle market and have recently been seen on some OEM bikes.

Functions - what functions can I look for in aftermarket tail lighting?

  • Running Lights
  • Brake Lights
  • Turn Signals
  • Combo - Run, Turn & Brake units
  • Modulating - tail, turn, and turn lights which modulate or flash before performing their primary functions (see Kuryakyn Triple Whammy or Kisan Tailblazer)

What are the most cost effective modifications to the rear tail section?

  • Clear Alternatives makes clear (and smoked) turn signal and tail lights for most makes and models
  • Electrical Connections makes a turn signal conversion kit which turns your stock turn signals into run, turn, and brake lights.  EC-01315

Things to remember:

  • Amber lights in the rear can only be used as turn signals
  • Running or brake lights must be red
  • If installing LED's as turn signals, you will need a load equalizer
  • If your right or left turn blinks (lightly) while the opposite is on... you may need Diode Kit

Customizing the rear of your bike is easily done, and can bring some awesome style and increased visibility to your ride.

Take care,

Kyle Bradsahw aka: manybikes
