  • Garmin on my Boolah-vard!

OK, call this biker noob question #1 from me:

I'm looking into installing my Garmin on my M90 (I get lost easy; sue me!), and want to do it right the first time, but I'm a little apprehensive.

Has anyone done this before, and if so, what should I watch out for?  I've locates some spiffy mount kits (currently I'm looking at the Lido mount systems) but I'm wondering how hard will it be to run the DC wire from the handlebars to the battery?  Is there a recommended route for the wire?  Is the gas tank easy to get under?

Also, I was concerned about the best way to wire this thing; the cord apparently comes with simple bare-copper leads.  My dealership service guy says to avoid using the fuse block, and to wire it directly to the battery.  Is this common?  That seems a little sloppy as far as DIY projects go.

Also: does anyone know where I can get a "hood" for my Garmin?  I've been told that glare on the screen can be a factor.

    Any and all advice appreciated!

I use a Garmin Nuvi and a Lowrance I - Way on my bike and cars . I put a powerport in a cover under the handlebars wired to the battery. Makes it easy to unhook when leaving the bike plus can run other accessories. They make powerports that fit on handlebars also . There are a lot of options and price ranges you can go to but in my opinion its rather easy to install if you have a bit of apptitude ! Good luck !

I have the lido mount for my nuvi, currantly on the RS, I would mount a power source as stated and use car adapter. Alot of nice looking power adapters out there and $$$$$, on the RoadStar it already had a 12 accessory plug near battery which was nice since it turns off with key and has its own fuse. My c50 has no such animal, and I would have to come off the battery, u would want to use an in line fuse I would assume, and if not running a relay through switch, it would be very important to YOU, that u make sure to shut it off when bike is off. As for my set up, I used a cheap walmart plug and mounted to my shield. I never remove shield from this bike, but used spade connectors in case I wanted to remove itGPS.jpg

GPS.jpgThought I had a pic of the plug, must be other computer. anyway I just raised back of the tank on the roadie, The SUZ is way easy, as far as c50, u want to make sure where ever u run the wires it is not a chaffing point, and all is secured. Did I mention, I love the mount12V cheap walmart outlet

  • Thuh FollowUp:

OK, I busted down and bought the Lido mount.  As usual, I was "overthinking" this whole thing.  I ran the wire directly from the battery to the mount, tucked up under the fuel tank and through the handlebars with the other electrical plumbing.

My biggest problem now: trying to see the darn thing in the daylight.  The sun glare makes it almost unreadable.  Looks like I'll have to improvise some sort of hood thingy for it.  If anyone knows of a commercial product that does this (a viewing hood for a Garmin), please clue me in.

UPDATE:  OK, so I'm a knucklehead.  I just Googled "Garmin 255W visor", there are plenty of sources for this thing.  Feh.

    BRAVO

I was going to suggest GOOGLE, I need a hood/visor for mine, sometimes just changing the angle helps though

Couldn't you fabricate a visor out of plastic, or even cardboard that you could paint to be more weather resistant (and look better) and then use some velcro to attach to the GPS like the commercially made visors do?
