Hi I'm Dim... no I don't mean I'm not very bright, I mean my nickname is Dim, it's short for Dimitra, and I'm short in general (vertically challenged).
I've been riding for about 5 years, but have always thought that motorbikes were cool, I just didn't have much exposure to them while I was growing up, no one around me owned one. Hubby was offered his mate's Harley to ride for our wedding day, and that in turn sparked him to buy a Harley and my immediate response was "Ok fine, but I'm not riding on the back so you're going to have to teach me to ride my own!"
Riding is my therapy. It's my escape and a great release from stress or anything negative in life that can get you wound up. It's like the wind blowing past you as you ride is literally blowing away all the troubles and lifting the weight of the world off your shoulders. It's a passion and something that I enjoy together with my husband. It's also a great contrast to my daily routine working in a professional office environment.
TWNKL is my baby, she's a V-Star 650, hence the name (twnkl twnkl little star). I've made a few mods so that she fits me and I love how bikes are so simple to personalise and change to suit your own individuality. She certainly is a work in progress, however in saying that I do love my bike just the way it is right now.
It's flattering to have other women come up to me and tell me that it's really cool to see a woman out riding her own bike. Or to be an inspriation for someone with a small bike that maybe they too can ride a bigger bike one day. Makes me very proud that I might be able to set a positive example and be a role model in that way. I would recommend riding to anyone who has always wanted to try it. If I can do it, anybody can! But I would say that you need to have a certain confidence about riding to be safe, and also a sense of appreciation for your position of vulnerability on the road. I try to never get cocky out on the road riding and I still consider myself a beginner even after five years. I learn something new each time I go out, and it's always an opportunity to practice and refine my skills.
Some of you know (well everyone, cos I'll tell anyone who'll listen...) that hubby and I are off on our first riding tour at the beginning of November. We're very excited and I love that I can keep challenging myself and growing with my riding.
Ride safe all.
