Vegas 2009 Bike fest and beyon

This year we had planned on riding to Vegas, but Kenny decided to “jump the shark” and crashed a scooter, breaking his hip just 2 weeks before the trip.
So being the kind hearted person I am, I sent Heather over to Kenny’s everyday leading up to the trip to make Kenny got up and walk and teach him how to use one of her old power wheelchair or I would not take Kenny with us because I knew he would not make the drive down unless he could stretch.
Friday Oct 2nd around 2am we load everyone up and head south, Vegas here we come. About 30 minutes into the drive Kenny remembers he forgot his cash at home. “Sorry Kenny no heading back now guess you’re going to have to use the CC or be broke. “ Few miles down the road Kenny yelps in pain, and starts saying he is not going to make it, I tell him I will find a bus stop and he can work his way home, after adjusting the air cushion and taking a pain pill he relaxes.
After one stop for gas and allowing Kenny to stretch his leg, we make Vegas at 9am; we head to the Main Street Hotel and Casino for breakfast, just after 10am we head over to the Cashman’s Center to get an early start at the vendor village. This is my 3rd year going to Bike Fest, My last 2 trips where 2005 and 2006. I have been to hundreds of bike shows over the years; I always enjoy looking at the bikes, girls, vendor and other bikers. I will say that even thought this year the event seem a bit smaller then years past, there was still a lot to see.

After seeing everything we could we headed back to our hotel to check in, clean up, rest and get ready for dinner at the http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/ , It is October Fest…. Around 11am we head over to the Mandalay Bay Casino. After following the signs for Accessible Parking for over 30 minutes, we finally find a police officer on a bike and ask where the parking is, He has us follow him back down to Valet Parking where there are no signs but rows of empty Accessible Parking.
After we enter the Hotel we follow the signs to the Tattoo show, at the crossroads there is a sign that points up so we find the elevator and go up, where we find another group looking for the Tattoo show, after walking around we (the group) find someone and ask where the show is, and are told it is down on the first floor before you get to the Shark Reef.
Finally we make it to the show. As we start looking at all the Tattoo Artist booths, we see a small group moving toward us, I see the show Promoter and a number of people in suits, not giving it any more thought I went back to checking out the art work.
A few minutes later we are in the middle of a crowd, I look over and see what I had missed before, Sylvester Stallone. We run into the crowd a number of times over the next few hours, Heather and Kenny because of the wheelchairs got to know the security guards around Sylvester Stallone. Heather even got to talk with Mr. Stallone for a few minutes and found out he was showing some artwork to different Tattoo Artists for a new tattoo he wanted to get.
I found a booth selling framed prints, and they had a print of Elvira Mistress of the Dark which I had to get. As I turned around to leave the booth I ran into Sabina Kelley
international pinup model and burlesque dancer. All I can say is WOW; she was very nice to stop for a photo with me. 
Kenny was in heaven at the show, they had Budweiser! And he had ???? l lost count but it was more than 4….
I found a guy to touch up one of my tattoos and at a great price. After spending more the 5 hours at the show we all wanted to get something to eat. So we went back to the Main Street Hotel and Casino for dinner (note I go there a lot).
After dinner we went over to Fremont Street for the free live music and the over head light shows.
Kenny and I went into the Glitter Gulch the only Strip club downtown, because they said no cover, what they don’t say it that it’s a 2 dink min and the drinks are $8.50 no matter what you drink. After our drinks Kenny and I left, the girls seem as broad as we did.Sunday Oct 3rd BugOrama, gun show and home
We checked out of the Hotel and headed out to the Speed Way and BugOrama, we ask the guy at the gate for the Assessable Parking, he tells us he does not know where that is and points us to main parking area, as we pull in I ask another guy about parking and was told to ask the ticket sales people, so we decided that if no one knows where the parking is we should head out.
As we are getting on the freeway we hear about a Gun and Knife show so we head over. I got a photo or 2 before some vendor decide that photos were not allowed enough the Security guard was standing right there watching me. They had a lot of cool thing none of which I could bring home.
So we loaded up for the trip home, after fighting the wind for hours we made it home around 9:30pm,

The real danger is we choose to ride on 2 tires rather than 4. The real danger is also in how we choose to ride.
I have a friend that owns a scooter shop and he received 5 new scooters from Genuine Scooters http://www.genuinescooters.com/ we uncrated a Black Jack model and began riding it around the parking lot. At some point my friend Aaron challenged me to a drag race, he on a Fly Trek, me on the Black Jack. We rode to the end of the parking lot a went at it! Neither scooter is capable of more than 40mph and the lot isn't long enough to get any where near that speed. As I left off, I was doing maybe 10-15 mph at this point, I applied the front brake which locked up then the front end tucked under and highsided me on to my right side. I wasn't wearing any protective gear whatsoever! I mean it's just a little scooter right?! I ended up with a concussion, torn knee and a broken hip. In over 30 years of riding this wasn't my worst wreck but it was the only one that was totally my fault. I'm getting to old for this ####!
Like it's said, it ain't the bike it's the nut attached to the handlebar. Always wear your gear!

Dragging my fog light mounts

I took it easy for the first leg to just before the “Junction” then I got up on top of the bars with my elbows out and started to ride like I had a “set”! I have to say wrinkles and all the mighty Battlax stock like bubble gum after a week on the sidewalk! I was even dragging my fog lights mounts, and the lights themselves!, that I mounted under the engine guards!

The outer edge of the tread re

Even after the bead was set and the tire aired to 42 lbs the outer edge of the tread retained a series of wrinkles. Neither of us can explain this. We thought it was because the tire was too wide. That couldn’t be since I have seen bikes with rear tires three sizes wider than stock that didn’t wrinkle like this. Any thoughts?

I’ve got over 3,000 miles on my Bridgestone G019 205/60-16 “V” rated rear car tire so far. I just installed a Bridgestone Battlax BT016 160/60-17 rear tire on the front of my Valkyrie. I mounted it backwards of coarse. First I’ll go over the install of the front tire. Check out the attached photos. Now between myself and my two friends Aaron and Dennis we had never experienced a tire bead wrinkle up like this one and we've been around. Of coarse we had never attempted to mount a rear tire on a front wheel either.
We had a heck of a time figuring out how to get the bead to seat. We tried the old ratchet strap trick but eventually it took Aaron and Dennis just using their hands and one knee and a lot of tire goop to finally get an air seal. In 90+ degree heat it was a heck of a work out. At least it was for them cause I was taking pictures. hehe

I may go with a 150 series tire next time if for no other reason to try and get rid of those darn chicken strips on the front tire! LoL!

Gold Country Ride 04/19/09

Description:It was a beautiful day for a ride. I had just installed a car tire on the back of my Valkyrie the day before and was eager to ring it out on some nice back roads. I met up with Aaron at our shop around 9am and waited for the rest of the group to show up. Aaron was riding our recently refreshed 1980 CB750F. Jim was the first to show on his ‘busa then Greg on his CBR929. Greg nearly biffed it on a batch of gravel when he made the turn towards the shop. Just goes to show you don’t need to be dragging a knee at speed to toss it down the road. Finally Joel showed up on his ZX10R so we were off!We left Oakdale headed towards Knights Ferry via Orange Blossom Rd. From there we crossed 108/120 to Wilems/Crabtree Rd to Roberts Ferry. Man those sport bikes are fast! I wasn’t pushing as hard as I could due to the new rear tire but the way those guys could accelerate was a little humbling after years of riding with cruisers style bikers. So there I was usually about a half mile or so back with poor Aaron way behind since the old CB just didn’t have the legs to keep up. We stopped at Turlock Lake for a breather so Aaron could richen the carbs on the CB since it was running a little lean.From there we shot over to La Grange for a soda via Lake Rd. This is a fun strip of asphalt. We then headed down Hayward Rd/Merced Falls Rd to Merced Falls proper. It was here a guy in a late model sporty car suddenly turned into Michael Shumaker when he saw me in his mirrors! What is it with cagers? If I caught you that should tell you I’m way faster than you and you need to yield the right of way not gun it because you think you’re suddenly in an imaginary race with me! This guy was all over the road! He finally took a turn so fast he got sideways and nearly went off the road! He slowed down enough for me to slip by after that. Apparently everyone else in the group had issues with this guy. Next was the old couple on the Goldwing trike. The road was so bumpy the back wheels on that thing were bouncing off the ground! Not to mention the old gal on the back was launched in the air several times! I finally got around them just in time to hit a rough spot in the road that launched all 950+lbs of Valkyrie and me in the air and towards the shoulder of the road! Luckily my superior riding skills kept me on the road. Well maybe it was just luck ;-)Then it was off to Hornitos, Bear Valley then up Hwy 49 to Coulterville where they were having some kind off charity event. We hung out for a while then headed up to Greeley Hill for gas. We then went up Smith Station Rd to have lunch at the Iron Door in Groveland. After lunch we said our goodbyes and each headed home. It was a great day and we all made it home in one piece. Doesn’t get much better than that!
