I want to go riding so bad. I keep seeing bikes go past our picture window. But I can’t, I have my two granddaughters, for the whole weekend. They are 5 and 11 years old, they arrived at 5 pm Friday and they will be here until late afternoon Sunday. We went last night and all got our nails done. Today is planned full of activities, we are going to get new shoes to go with their Christmas outfits, then hair cut and styled, eyebrows waxed, (the 11 year old decide to pluck her own brows about 4 months ago, now there is enough grown back to get them shaped the right way.) We then will go out to lunch, come back home, get dressed in their picture outfits and go for their Christmas Pictures at 6 pm. I planned a busy day to try and take my mind off not being able to go riding, but I still want to going riding today, can’t go because Madcow/Chris/Honey/Pap’s is in the woods, with son and daughter-in-law, so I get the girls. I love the girls. Gee, I wish I could go riding. Oh, did I already say, I WANT TO GO RIDING! That thought has been going through my head every time I see a motorcycle go by, it will be worst while out driving my 15 passenger van today. For all of you out riding, have fun, enjoy and most of all stay safe. I really want to be out on my bike.
I took the Boss for a short but sweet ride this morning down to McLaren Vale which is a well renown wine region here in South Australia. We were not in any hurry and the low speeds allowed me to think back on the early years of my life and start to think where have the years gone. So I thought I might document a little of those years for you guys and girls to read.
I am the grandson of a WW1 vet who saw service in France and the son of a WW2 vet who saw service in New Guinea and Malaya. Because, as came later to realise, both those men in my life suffered from post traumatic stress, I had a fairly dysfunctional childhood. But having said that I will always be thankful to my father for instilling in me a love of motorcycles. I will always cherish the times I spent with him riding around the back roads on his old red Vincent.
I left school and home at the age of 15 and went to work on what was then the largest fenced in sheep station (ranch) in the southern hemisphere, Commonwealth Hill. In those days station life was bloody rough. No hot showers, OK in the summer when temps reach 50C but in winter when you had a half inch of ice on the water troughs it was a little hard. Mutton for breakfast, lunch and dinner and some of the roughest men I have ever met in my life. But, I was able to indulge in what is now my greatest passion besides my wife, kids and grandkids - motorcycles. You see, Commonwealth Hill was owned by Byron McLachlan who knew a bargain when he saw one. Just after WW2 he bought a heap of old ex army WLA Harleys. By the time I started work there there were none left going but a young English mechanic was able to restore just one from brand new parts still in boxes stored in the old workshop.
This old bike was given to me to muster sheep and do the water runs to ensure all of the water troughs were clean and full. That old bike just chugged along through the bull dust without missing a beat. I must say though in the first few weeks I spent more time falling off it than on it. I always had to ensure I had someone with me because I was unable to lift the bike on my own. I only weighed about 100 pounds wringing wet in those days.
After 12 months on Commonwealth Hill I moved to the Twins sheep station where I rode an old ex-army 350 BSA and finally Ag bikes. These new bikes were a dream. Light and easy to ride.
But my time in the bush was coming to an end. I started thinking of girls. Well we all make mistakes don't we?
I moved back to my home town Gawler, 25 miles north of Adelaide and the first thing I had to do was buy a motorbike. I didn't even have a drivers license. This was soon overcome after I went and seen the old police sargent who had caught me on many occasion driving the old man's Ford Customline before I could see over the steering wheel.
My first bike was a brand new 1972 Triumph Bonneville. It was absolutely beautiful. And the girls loved it as well. Well it wasn't long before I was hanging around with other like minded guys. Veterans of the Vietnam war were coming home and it wasn't long before the first of the outlaw motorcyle gangs were being formed. But that is a whole other story, perhaps for a later date.
Oh! by the way. If you are wondering what ever happened to that old WLA Harley, it is owned by a bloke who lives not 10 kilometres away from me and he has been fully restored it. He purchased the bike from Commonwealth Hill the year after I left there for $10.00. What would it be worth today?
Stay upright and safe everybody
This year we had planned on riding to Vegas, but Kenny decided to “jump the shark” and crashed a scooter, breaking his hip just 2 weeks before the trip.![]()

So being the kind hearted person I am, I sent Heather over to Kenny’s everyday leading up to the trip to make Kenny got up and walk and teach him how to use one of her old power wheelchair or I would not take Kenny with us because I knew he would not make the drive down unless he could stretch.
Friday Oct 2nd around 2am we load everyone up and head south, Vegas here we come. About 30 minutes into the drive Kenny remembers he forgot his cash at home. “Sorry Kenny no heading back now guess you’re going to have to use the CC or be broke. “ Few miles down the road Kenny yelps in pain, and starts saying he is not going to make it, I tell him I will find a bus stop and he can work his way home, after adjusting the air cushion and taking a pain pill he relaxes.
After one stop for gas and allowing Kenny to stretch his leg, we make Vegas at 9am; we head to the Main Street Hotel and Casino for breakfast, just after 10am we head over to the Cashman’s Center to get an early start at the vendor village. For a idea of events going on visit http://www.lasvegasbikefest.com/events.asp
This is my 3rd year going to Bike Fest, My last 2 trips where 2005 and 2006. I have been to hundreds of bike shows over the years; I always enjoy looking at the bikes, girls, vendor and other bikers. I will say that even thought this year the event seem a bit smaller then years past, there was still a lot to see.
There were custom wheels
Goth girls with gun!
Bikes for the little ones

The New 2011 Spider ?? Touring bike
Food and drinks….just to list a few
After seeing everything we could we headed back to our hotel to check in, clean up, rest and get ready for dinner at the http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/ , It is October Fest…. Hint if you sign up for the news letter they will send you a free beer coupon. FREE BEER!....
Saturday Oct 3rd Beyond Bike Fest, The World’s largest Tattoo Show
Around 11am we head over to the Mandalay Bay Casino. After following the signs for Accessible Parking for over 30 minutes, we finally find a police officer on a bike and ask where the parking is, He has us follow him back down to Valet Parking where there are no signs but rows of empty Accessible Parking.
After we enter the Hotel we follow the signs to the Tattoo show, at the crossroads there is a sign that points up so we find the elevator and go up, where we find another group looking for the Tattoo show, after walking around we (the group) find someone and ask where the show is, and are told it is down on the first floor before you get to the Shark Reef.
Finally we make it to the show. As we start looking at all the Tattoo Artist booths, we see a small group moving toward us, I see the show Promoter and a number of people in suits, not giving it any more thought I went back to checking out the art work.
A few minutes later we are in the middle of a crowd, I look over and see what I had missed before, Sylvester Stallone.
We run into the crowd a number of times over the next few hours, Heather and Kenny because of the wheelchairs got to know the security guards around Sylvester Stallone. Heather even got to talk with Mr. Stallone for a few minutes and found out he was showing some artwork to different Tattoo Artists for a new tattoo he wanted to get.
I found a booth selling framed prints, and they had a print of Elvira Mistress of the Dark which I had to get. As I turned around to leave the booth I ran into Sabina Kelley
international pinup model and burlesque dancer. All I can say is WOW; she was very nice to stop for a photo with me.
Kenny was in heaven at the show, they had Budweiser! And he had ???? l lost count but it was more than 4….
I found a guy to touch up one of my tattoos and at a great price. After spending more the 5 hours at the show we all wanted to get something to eat. So we went back to the Main Street Hotel and Casino for dinner (note I go there a lot).
After dinner we went over to Fremont Street for the free live music and the over head light shows.

Kenny and I went into the Glitter Gulch the only Strip club downtown, because they said no cover, what they don’t say it that it’s a 2 dink min and the drinks are $8.50 no matter what you drink. After our drinks Kenny and I left, the girls seem as broad as we did.
Sunday Oct 3rd BugOrama, gun show and home
We checked out of the Hotel and headed out to the Speed Way and BugOrama, we ask the guy at the gate for the Assessable Parking, he tells us he does not know where that is and points us to main parking area, as we pull in I ask another guy about parking and was told to ask the ticket sales people, so we decided that if no one knows where the parking is we should head out.
As we are getting on the freeway we hear about a Gun and Knife show so we head over. I got a photo or 2 before some vendor decide that photos were not allowed enough the Security guard was standing right there watching me. They had a lot of cool thing none of which I could bring home.
So we loaded up for the trip home, after fighting the wind for hours we made it home around 9:30pm,
(Sequel to my blog "Riding in the Rain")
Latest motto... "Just do it"...
I DID IT!!!
Woke in the middle of the night to hear the pouring rain outside, thinking please just let it rain out tonight so tomorrow is a clear day. Woke up and the sky was not too bad. Overcast, but not raining. Geared up and put on the waterproof pants over my riding jeans... (they fulfilled their use during the day). A light shower sprinkled over me as I rode to the Victoria Police rider training grounds.
The day was great, unfortunately the majority of the girls weren't as brave as us few, only 4 of us showed (out of 12) for the training - good news for me, as this meant 3 instructors for 4 girls... more personalised training, suits me!
The course covered all the basics many of us know, but don't practice as much as we should. The morning weather was fair, but we covered most of the theory first, then we got out there on the bikes. It rained on and off throughout the training but I was enjoying myself too much to care. We took a break when the heavy stuff set in, and got some hail too (they said it might).
I got to practice slow speed maneuvering, balancing the clutch, using the back brake to keep balanced at slow speed, u-turns. Also practiced weaving through cones, that was fun! I didn't knock any over and kept up a constant speed. We got to practice counter steering through a series of cones too. We covered progressive breaking, keeping in the optimum gear for change in conditions, slowing to a complete stop without putting feet down then taking off again, and hey - after a very heavy downpour and the ground soaked with puddles and all, we did emergency brake stopping. Skidded out the back tyre on my first go (a bit heavy footed), but I didn't panic and lifted my foot to disengage and re-applied gently, came to a complete stop. Was able to emergency brake in 5th gear going around 75km+ by the time we finished.
I was the only cruiser on the day, and they usually train Police only, and as the police ride BMW road bikes in Oz (and BMW or KTM trail bikes), they haven't really had cruisers through their course before. There were a few things they weren't expecting me to do because my bike was a cruiser - low rider they called it once LOL (or weren't expecting me to do well... like u-turns) and they were quite surprised when I did them so well. Same with the weaving through cones and slow speed, they said I have good clutch, throttle, brake control. I was really pleased to hear that I'm up to par and not below the benchmark.
The only 'bad' thing I did on the day, was get my waterproof pants against my pipes, and guess what happens - they melt! (I'm sorry but I'm a shorty! My inseam is too short, my leg touches the pipe, I couldn't help it *sniff*) It's only a small spot but enough to wreck the pants (maybe I can put a waterproof bandaid over it? LOL) and now have to clean the pipes up! The bike is grotty now and needs a good clean - OH while I think of it, hubby PROMISED me this morning that he would even help me clean the bike after today... I was half asleep but I haven't forgotten and I will take you up on it!! haha
Although I love riding with my spacemonkey69, I'm really glad this was something I could do myself, rain hail or shine - and that I didn't chicken out...
I'm looking forward to putting all my new tips and skills into practice, over and over and over.
Ready for my next adventure...

It was about 5 years ago, my best friend and I rode our bikes to work. We had to work out of town and it was a really hot day (about 90 degrees) and it was his birthday. The whole time we were out of town he kept saying "I know my wifes going to try to surprise me for my birthday" but he never expected what was about to happen. After a long hard day of working construction we started heading back to town when his wife called and said she had a surprise for him at our shop. As we pulled up to our shop we saw the surprise. She totally decked out his bike with sillystring. I couldnt stop laughing, It was soo hot outside the sillystring melted all over his paint and all over his leather and all over is chrome on his bike. But since we came back later in the day it had cooled off and the liguid sillystring became hard and it was baked in. He was soo pissed he rode home on his custom rainbow sillystring bike. lol. He ended up spending his whole birthday chipping this sillystring off his bike. POOR GUY. Girls, sillystring and motorcycles dont mix. lol
god where to begin?? okay check out the pics of my drive way to my garage. my garage is under my house, the drive way is very steep and it is a loose surface. so how to do it/ everybody knows, put on the front brake let it go slightly and let the bike roll down the drive. no problem.
last night after a bbq in the garden a couple of raindrops started falling. my VN and my girls Vstar where still standing outside so they hade to move inside. my best friend asked me if he needed to help, before i said yes or no he was on my bike. now he on my bike is no problem, i mean he has driven it a lot.
me on my girls bike was the first one down the drive into the garage. put the V star on the stand and looked up at the driveway. on the top of the driveway is my friend standing with my bike, he let's go of the brake COMPLETLY and comes down with about 20mph. braking on the driveway is a dont because of all the gravel. looking at his face i noticed that he wouldnt hold the bike and didn't know what to do.
picture this: my bike coming down the drive about 20mph towards me, the only thing a see is a big headlight speeding towards me, above the headlight a big black dude yelling WILLEM, WILLEM, WILLEM, WILLEM, WILLEM(my name) and no time to breake. i just put the Vstar on the stand witch was directly in his pad.
my mind was doing overtime at that moment, what should i do, is he falling before entering the garage or does he comes in the garage at a completly idiot speed and drives straight into the Vstar ???
he made it in to the garage but his speed was way way way to high. the only thing i could do was jump in front of the bike. i was really thinking that if he couldn't brake on time, i would be between him and the Vstar and thinking if he doesnt stop i WILL stop him(uhu). he speeds in the garage puts on the front break and stops in time. the last thing that went trough my mind was: "how mad can you get at your best friends when he totals 2 of your bikes at once????
my girl and his girls where sitting upstairs waiting for the big hit. waited 5 sec, waited 10sec, no hit. both came running down shouting : everything oke, everything oke?? my friend looks up at both off them en says: he girls did i just scared you 2?? yeah yeah and what about me?
peeps everything did go well and we all can laugh about it now, but i can tell ya all if you whant to test your friendship Do try this at home.

Well it was another beatiful weekend in North Carolina. Of course I was out ridin. I'm out ridin every chance I get. I left out Saturday morning with no place in mind to go. Just wanted to enjoy the sunshine and quiet. Well before I knew it I had rode about 50 miles, which is a little more then a quick saturday morning ride for me . Started lookin for a place to stop and get a drink. well happen on an open house sign for Freedom Bikers Chruch. It was about 2 miles up the road. thought what better place to stop. Pulled in and was welcomed .
There were all sorts of bikes and all sorts of people. And of course vendors, food and drinks. One of the best things was when I pulled in I didn't get any of the normal questions or looks about being a female rider and be by myself.Spent about 20mins there meet some really nice people. checked out the enties for the bike show and thought maybe should enter but weren't judging til that night so. (think my bike would have done good) .
It was great to get out and just happen on to such a great event with some really great people. So you never know what or who you will find when you get on your bike and take a ride. Can't wait for next weekend to see who I'll meet or what event I happen upon RIDE ON AND SAFE
My girlfriend and I rode our bikes from Loveland, Co. to Las Vegas,Nv. and back in the last week. She has a Yamaha, FZ6R. I don't think she enjoyed the ride as much as I did, but she was ready to ride again the day after we got back.
