Saturday in Niagara was one of those gifts the Universe sends us from time to time. It was 65F and sunny. It was windy as heck with gusts that moved the Road Glide sideways. Always a pant-filling experience doing a buck and a quarter (125 kph or 78 mph) on the back road regional highways. I usually have less twist on the throttle but the day felt soooo good. The sun on my back, a clean scooter, and some good tunes on the iPod. Exuberance I think is the best word to describe how I felt.
I was fully into the moment. That delicious space where the ride is great, the weather is great and you feel likely shouting it is so much fun.
I was dog-tired after a long (180 mile) ride yesterday in butt-freezing cold. Now I know why they sell lined full leather pants here instead of the unlined chaps I wore for that run. No long runs today. I just did a large loop around the Niagara Peninsula diggin’ all the other folks out riding on this late fall bonus day.
I started out with a troubled mind thinking of the news I had just got that a very respected friend had brain cancer, and my godmother had quickly plunged into dementia, plus the horror of Fort Hood and the loss of so many young lives for no purpose. A heavy load indeed.
I like Jackson Browne a lot. His song writing is so evocative and the musicians that work with him bring a lot of talent to the sound. As the miles peeled away beneath me, Lives in the Balance played and then, Fountain of Sorrow and as the tunes played and all the good folks out there gave me the wave and the sun cleansed my spirit, the black clouds passed and I said to myself I'm Alive. And that is good.
Thought of taking off jackets, helmets, chaps and put on some Halloween costume!
We had fun!
The twelve inch windshield made a difference. Went for a short ride yesterday and the high was 50 degrees. Lowers work better than the oem windshield and it was bearable w/o the leather chaps, any cooler and the chaps are on. Keeps the wind off my hands so when it does get cold the heavy gloves should be great.
I am enjoying this bike, more than any I have had so I don't want the riding to end. Next add either a crash bar or a new rider seat w/backrest. Posting a profile picture with the Memphis Shades Batwing Fairing on the bike.
today i got the phone call i never wanted to get, my daughter called to say she had been hit while riding her motorcycle. thank god she was only bruised up and skinned up, she was wearing helmet and riding jacket and chaps and boots. her bike faired pretty good too but still is gonna be down for a few weeks while the parts come in to fix it. she had a person turn left in front of her, he never turned his signal on and witnesses said he accelerated as he came to the intersection, like he was trying to beat her. she skidded and ended up laying it down and her front tire hit the rear of his car, and he just kepted driving, never slowed down. right now im mad as hell and frustrated!!! why dont these car drivers see us on bikes??? i mean my daughter has a pink full face helmet with a pink mohawk on it and her riding jacket is bright pink, how in the world does somebody not see that??? i still cant understand that, i mean i was hit back in july by a fella turning left in front of me too and i wondered how he could miss seeing someone who is 275 pounds on a big motorcycle, hell im bigger than some cars lol. are car drivers just that stupid??? i am really starting to wonder. how do we get the message across to those idiots that they better start paying more attention to driving than talking on their cell phones or changing the radio station??? well i guess my ranting is over, and if your reading this i'll let ya get on with your day and i will say another thank you to the fella upstairs that it wasn't worse . keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down and watch out for them stupid idiots that dont see us.
Cold today. It is getting late in the season. Got out the thinsulate leather chaps for the first time this year and they made it bearable. Gonna have to do a fairing instead of the narrow windshield. Memphis Shades batwing fairing looks like a money saving option and it still looks good. Hopefully it comes in quick so I can get it on before next weekend. Hopefully this extends the riding season a little bit more.
Now I've heard all of the arguements, like I'm sure everyone else has, about why they ride what they ride, why theirs is better than everyone else's, where the darn thing is made and all of that jazz. If you are happy with what have, why worry if everyone else likes it or not?
I have seen a lot of bikes on several continents and other than the whole Sport bike/Cruiser/Touring Bike arguement as to which one is better, I have never seen as many arguements as we have here in the states about what you ride, so the inevitable question becomes, are you doing it for the ride or the look? Answer honestly now, no body's listening but you.
I ride an 1100cc 2004 Honda Shadow Spirit and I love it. Good power, reliable, all the amenities I wanted. Nice little add-ins like being liquid cooled, with shaft drive, no EFI, (Darnit) and not a lot of vibration. It suits me and fits my style. I have a buddy, however whose dream bike to own was a 96 inch five speed Sucker Punch Sally - Old school bobber chopper. Now I have to say, it's pretty but I wouldn't want it. I'm not much of a spring seat/hard tail kind of guy. Admittedly, it gets more looks than my Shadow, but I can at least walk like normal after four hours on the road and my fillings are still tight in my teeth. Another buddy has a full dress 1400cc Kawasaki Concours. Watching him attack the twisties while I more like glide through and my chopper bro kind of eases through makes us jealous in short order at his bike's sport bike capability, (not to mention his on-board stereo) while we're happy to be stretched out and comfortable, but we are more happy still to be riding, but boy do we get some weird looks cruising up to a road side greasy spoon for coffee. (one dude in a full leather riding suit with a full face/modular helmet, one with a cruiser style helmet, jeans, and leather vest and the third in wife beater t-shirt, leather chaps, black jeans and a skid lid) Most people have a real funny look like they expect a three way brawl to break out, while always makes us smile. (Wonder what they would say if they knew we were a Corrections Officer, A State Trooper and a Fireman? No Village People jokes!)
I guess it all come down to ride what you like, like what you ride. Enjoy the company of others who do the same, pass on what you know, don't be afraid to ask if you don't, watch out for each other, be safe and ride hard.

hey everyone! dont know if any one has noticed but i have changed bikes recently... back in july i was hit by a car that turned left in front of me and totalled my intruder... thankfully i walked away from that with no broken bones... just some real bad bruises and road rash... goes to show you how much helmets really do work, as i went head first over the bars into the car with my head, then flipped over the car and bounced and skidded down the street... the outer shell of the helmet cracke in three pieces, thank god my that wasnt my head, lol... i never realized u could get roadrash thru leather chaps and jacket but guess i was wrong, lol... anyway like i said i was lucky and came out ok although i did learn a few things from that accident, most important is to get a motorcycle jacket that has elbow, back and shoulder padding... i wore a leather motorcycle jacket before and since have switched to a textile that has all the protection... but on a bright side i did get me another bike, a 2001 suzuki volusia, that i fell in love with the first time i threw my leg over it... well hope all of you stay safe out there and keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down!!! REMEMBER CRASHING SUCKS!!!!
