What is the real danger?

The real danger is we choose to ride on 2 tires rather than 4. The real danger is also in how we choose to ride.
I have a friend that owns a scooter shop and he received 5 new scooters from Genuine Scooters http://www.genuinescooters.com/ we uncrated a Black Jack model and began riding it around the parking lot. At some point my friend Aaron challenged me to a drag race, he on a Fly Trek, me on the Black Jack. We rode to the end of the parking lot a went at it! Neither scooter is capable of more than 40mph and the lot isn't long enough to get any where near that speed. As I left off, I was doing maybe 10-15 mph at this point, I applied the front brake which locked up then the front end tucked under and highsided me on to my right side. I wasn't wearing any protective gear whatsoever! I mean it's just a little scooter right?! I ended up with a concussion, torn knee and a broken hip. In over 30 years of riding this wasn't my worst wreck but it was the only one that was totally my fault. I'm getting to old for this ####!
Like it's said, it ain't the bike it's the nut attached to the handlebar. Always wear your gear!

I have to say wrinkles and all the mighty Battlax stock like bubble gum after a week on the sidewalk! I was even dragging my fog lights mounts, and the lights themselves!, that I mounted under the engine guards!

Even after the bead was set and the tire aired to 42 lbs the outer edge of the tread retained a series of wrinkles. Neither of us can explain this. We thought it was because the tire was too wide. That couldn’t be since I have seen bikes with rear tires three sizes wider than stock that didn’t wrinkle like this. Any thoughts?

Full on Dark Side Now!

I’ve got over 3,000 miles on my Bridgestone G019 205/60-16 “V” rated rear car tire so far. I just installed a Bridgestone Battlax BT016 160/60-17 rear tire on the front of my Valkyrie. I mounted it backwards of coarse. First I’ll go over the install of the front tire. Check out the attached photos. Now between myself and my two friends Aaron and Dennis we had never experienced a tire bead wrinkle up like this one and we've been around. Of coarse we had never attempted to mount a rear tire on a front wheel either. We had a heck of a time figuring out how to get the bead to seat. We tried the old ratchet strap trick but eventually it took Aaron and Dennis just using their hands and one knee and a lot of tire goop to finally get an air seal. In 90+ degree heat it was a heck of a work out. At least it was for them cause I was taking pictures. heheEven after the bead was set and the tire aired to 42 lbs the outer edge of the tread retained a series of wrinkles. Neither of us can explain this. We thought it was because the tire was too wide. That couldn’t be since I have seen bikes with rear tires three sizes wider than stock that didn’t wrinkle like this. Any thoughts?Anyway I went out this morning to scrub in the tire on one of my favorite routes. I live in Modesto.http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=Patterson+Pass+Rd&daddr=37.63816,-121.002731+to:Del+Puerto+Canyon+Rd+to:Patterson+Pass+Rd&geocode=FRQPPwId5FjA-A%3B%3BFX7-OgIdcPbD-A%3BFdQNPwIdPFHA-A&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=11&via=1,2&sll=37.659363,-121.325455&sspn=0.29245,0.724411&ie=UTF8&ll=37.659363,-121.325455&spn=0.29245,0.724411&t=pI took it easy for the first leg to just before the “Junction” then I got up on top of the bars with my elbows out and started to ride like I had a “set”! I have to say wrinkles and all the mighty Battlax stock like bubble gum after a week on the sidewalk! I was even dragging my fog lights mounts, and the lights themselves!, that I mounted under the engine guards! Needless to say I'm very happy with how this experiment turned out. I may go with a 150 series tire next time if for no other reason to try and get rid of those darn chicken strips on the front tire! LoL!

LoL!

Gold Country Ride 04/19/09

It was a beautiful day for a ride. I had just installed a car tire on the back of my Valkyrie the day before and was eager to ring it out on some nice back roads. I met up with Aaron at our shop around 9am and waited for the rest of the group to show up. Aaron was riding our recently refreshed 1980 CB750F. Jim was the first to show on his ‘busa then Greg on his CBR929. Greg nearly biffed it on a batch of gravel when he made the turn towards the shop. Just goes to show you don’t need to be dragging a knee at speed to toss it down the road. Finally Joel showed up on his ZX10R so we were off!

We left Oakdale headed towards Knights Ferry via Orange Blossom Rd. From there we crossed 108/120 to Wilems/Crabtree Rd to Roberts Ferry. Man those sport bikes are fast! I wasn’t pushing as hard as I could due to the new rear tire but the way those guys could accelerate was a little humbling after years of riding with cruisers style bikers. So there I was usually about a half mile or so back with poor Aaron way behind since the old CB just didn’t have the legs to keep up. We stopped at Turlock Lake for a breather so Aaron could richen the carbs on the CB since it was running a little lean.

From there we shot over to La Grange for a soda via Lake Rd. This is a fun strip of asphalt. We then headed down Hayward Rd/Merced Falls Rd to Merced Falls proper. It was here a guy in a late model sporty car suddenly turned into Michael Shumaker when he saw me in his mirrors! What is it with cagers? If I caught you that should tell you I’m way faster than you and you need to yield the right of way not gun it because you think you’re suddenly in an imaginary race with me! This guy was all over the road! He finally took a turn so fast he got sideways and nearly went off the road! He slowed down enough for me to slip by after that. Apparently everyone else in the group had issues with this guy. Next was the old couple on the Goldwing trike. The road was so bumpy the back wheels on that thing were bouncing off the ground! Not to mention the old gal on the back was launched in the air several times! I finally got around them just in time to hit a rough spot in the road that launched all 950+lbs of Valkyrie and me in the air and towards the shoulder of the road! Luckily my superior riding skills kept me on the road. Well maybe it was just luck ;-)

Then it was off to Hornitos, Bear Valley then up Hwy 49 to Coulterville where they were having some kind off charity event. We hung out for a while then headed up to Greeley Hill for gas. We then went up Smith Station Rd to have lunch at the Iron Door in Groveland. After lunch we said our goodbyes and each headed home. It was a great day and we all made it home in one piece. Doesn’t get much better than that!

July 1, 2003 an idiot in a mini-van tried to kill me!

This bonehead made an illegal u-turn from the right lane when I was almost to his rear bumper. Needless to say I didn't have a chance.
My '00 LC that I killed the bear with was totaled.

I suffered the following injuries whe a mini-van made an illegal U-turn in front of me:

-concussion
-broken jaw in 2 places, 4 screws and a steel plate to hold it together! Wired shut for 6 weeks!
-broken C-7 in my neck
-broken collarbone
-broken shoulder blade
-broken rib
-both bones in my lower leg were shattered beyond repair = 5-1/2 months in a cast

Story by Spyder,

I was asked to write this post as a way of providing all of you with the best information we have at this time with respect to Kenny and the "incident", and to eliminate any need for speculation.

So here it is:

Kenny (That's me in the photo below) and Barry were working the Poker Run stop at the Long's on Hwy 50 (Lake Tahoe Boulevard) in South Lake Tahoe. As the morning progressed, a woman rider on a motorcycle, noticing all the bikes in the parking lot stopped by and curiously inquired about the events taking place there. After some conversation with several of our SCRC members, she remounted her scoot and took off down the road.

A short time later she returned, on foot, to the Long's and indicated to our people there that her bike had broken down; the clutch cable had become disabled (I don't recall whether the cable snapped, or the connecting hardware failed). She declined the offer to attempt temporary repairs, instead inquiring as to the possibility of a ride home.

Kenny, offered his assistance and Barry offered to let them use his bike since it was better equipped for a passenger and also because Kenny had his bike parked along the boulevard with his jacket draped on his windshield to help our Poker Run riders easily locate the turn into the parking lot.

The two of them left Longs and headed west, continuing directly across the highway 89/50 Junction and up the divided 4-lane thoroughfare on the other side. About 2 miles up the road from that point, Kenny had moved into the left lane and was beginning to pass a slower moving pickup truck. As he approached the area to the left of that vehicle, a Black bear darted out from the dense foliage on the right shoulder - hidden from Kenny's view by the pickup truck.

After investigating the accident scene, studying the physical evidence on the highway itself, and speaking with Kenny, my assessment of what happened is this:

The driver of the pickup, seeing the bear, slammed on his brakes and veered towards the right hand shoulder. The bear continued on, moving at its maximum speed to avoid the pickup truck suddenly appears in the left lane directly in front of Kenny, taking both the bear and Kenny by surprise. The bear, caught unaware and frightened, stopped and turned to fight this new enemy that was attacking it - an LC 1500 - closing rapidly upon it. The bear's final decision was to turn its head and bare its teeth at Kenny. A fraction of a second later they collided.

The impact took the bears life and sent Kenny, his passenger, and the LC 1500 reeling down the road. The bike suffered instant damage to the forks and front fender. What happened next, as best I can determine, was that the bike began to wobble violently, at some point spinning hard to the left and causing the left passenger peg to contact the pavement with great force. The bike, rotated on that new fulcrum point, sending the rear tire around to the right. As the bike became perpendicular to the roadway, the tires gained traction and the resulting "high-side" launched the woman from the passenger seat - her grasp on Kenny took him with her. They traveled down the pavement tangled up together and ultimately came to a stop some distance down the road.

The Aftermath:

The officer on the scene was astonished at what he saw, and after looking over the physical evidence, couldn't believe that Kenny was able to keep the bike up as long as he did, "...it was a miracle." He suggested that Kenny's ability to keep the bike up as long as he did might very well have saved both of their lives.
Kenny lost a lot of skin. His hands were decimated, much of one being exposed to the bone, the other what you would expect from a gloveless hand vs. asphalt encounter. Both his arms are completely wound in gauze, with many stitches preceded by a few hours of painstaking pea-gravel removal at the hospital. His right elbow was split and completely exposed to the bone, allowing the doctor to inspect Kenny's tendons and muscles as he wiggled each finger. Although severely traumatized, Kenny's structural tendon and muscle framework is fairly intact, except for a section of muscle tissue that has gone missing on the roadway.

The woman banged up both of her knees, broke a tooth, and suffers from road rash to a variety of places on her body including her nose and face. She fared better than Kenny and, except for the broken tooth, will make a full recovery.
There have been rumors that Kenny had been drinking and was perhaps under the influence. The truth is this: Kenny had 2 beers over the course of over 3 hours. The officer on the scene had Kenny submit to a blood-alcohol content test and it came up under .03

To the best of my knowledge this is what occurred - Spyder
